SCARE for a CURE – “one SCREAM at a time!”
(SCARE for a CURE is an Austin-based nonprofit organization that raises money for local cancer charities, “one SCREAM at a time!” Each year we produce Austin’s only extreme, full contact, interactive haunted house adventure that is guaranteed to chill the depths of your soul.)
In the late 80’s and early 90’s, Britannia Manor was a legendary haunted house hosted every few years by Lord British (Richard Garriott, creator of the Ultima video game series) at his Austin, TX mansion. This was not a normal haunted house, it went through the mansion, including some of it’s secret passages, and was interactive just like a video game, where you had to find different items in one scene to use it in another. Plus, since profit was not an issue, it was extravagant, including flying demons, boat rides, moving passages, and plenty of fire. Sadly, Britannia Manor’s last hurrah was in 1994.
HOWEVER, this year, Austin based Scare For A Cure (scareforacure.org), which is where many of the old Britannia Manor volunteers went, and is led by Jarrett Crippen (aka the Defuser from “Who Wants to be a Superhero”), is putting on their house at the NEW mansion that Lord British is currently building in Austin. Scare For A Cure also does interactive houses, and with them now being at a huge plot of land, with all the space they need, this year could be a great year. Not much is known yet, especially if Mr. Garriott is letting them use some of his unfinished mansion, which is to include catacombs, tons of secret passages, and a castle motif. Or if he is supplying some funding. Regardless, this is a haunted attraction you should consider going to if you are in the area. Tickets are on sale now, including red level ones that promise plenty of physical challenge, and more interaction. Back in the day, people would literally wait for days on the road going up to Britannia Manor to experience it, so once word really gets out I expect tickets to sell out way in advance.
This year’s theme is Blood Ritual, which seems to be based on vampires. Even if this year’s house doesn’t really reach the levels of classic Britannia Manor, is it a great sign that Lord British is sticking his royal toe back in the waters for a test, and soon we may be lucky enough to experience a full-on Britannia Manor 2.0.
